SmartLF SC, SC Xpress and SG Series scanners operate as USB2 connected scanners for Windows XP.  This is a limitation of the XP operating system. Windows XP is not recommended for Colortrac scanners.

IMPORTANT CONNECTION INFORMATION

Colortrac has noticed a higher than expected early life failure rate of some of the latest pcs and together with computer manufacturers has been investigating the possible causes.  It seems that ever increasing electronics miniaturisation has made the most recent pc motherboards very sensitive to any electrical noise on the earth line of the USB2.0 interface and failures have been noticed with devices using earthed USB2.0 connections such as scanners and monitors. This does not apply to a non-earthed devices such as USB memory sticks, mice or keyboards.  The Colortrac SmartLF range of SC,SG scanners are USB3.0 devices and must be connected to a USB3.0 port on the attached pc.  Earlier technology SmartLF Gx+ scanners use USB2 interfaces but should still be connected to the USB3 port on these newer computers as these are fully USB2 compatible.

USB3.0 sockets are usually identified (but not always) by a blue plastic tab inside the socket or alternatively by the SuperSpeed “SS” abbreviation on the socket or socket fascia.  USB3.0 is designed for higher data communication rates than USB2.0 and will provide increased scanner productivity.

Existing customers with Colortrac scanners who are not using a USB3 port connection on their attached computer should change to using the USB3 port if they upgrade their computer.  No new cable is needed.

All Colortrac SmartLF scanners manufactured after mid-2014 no longer switch the earth line and minimise the possibility of electrical problems in newer, more sensitive pcs when the scanner is power cycled.  If you have a scanner manufactured before 2014 but are changing to a computer made after 2014 we recommend using a USB3 port on the computer and additionally if you would like to obtain a simple scanner earth modification kit to contact your Colortrac distributor who can provide it.  In common with other peripheral manufacturers Colortrac recommend that best practices are followed wherever possible to minimise static or electrical surges and to avoid connecting devices when systems are already powered on.

Requirements for SmartLF SC and SG scanners

For USB2 operation 6.0Gbit/sec is not mandatory.  For USB3 operation see above. Manufactured PCs with pre-configured USB3 PCIe add-in cards are acceptable. SmartLF SC and SG scanners have an enhanced USB2 speed and are approximately 50% faster than earlier generation USB2 Colortrac scanners and support data rates up to approximately 35MB/sec.  A higher performance computer may be required to match the maximum scan and data speeds achievable with this newer generation USB2. IMPORTANT:SmartLF scanners operate as USB2 devices under Windows XP and will not achieve their maximum designed USB3 data speed of 60-85MB/sec.  To achieve high USB3 scan speeds a Windows Windows 7 or later operating system must be used with the computer specification described above.  SmartLF scanners are not compatible with the Etron USB3 chipset.  If there is a possibility the USB3 cable has been physically damaged it should be replaced immediately.  Broken USB3 cables can very quickly cause permanent computer damage.  If you find the scanner does not scan properly using USB3 but works properly with USB2 then the USB3 driver in the computer may not be up-to-date.  USB3 connections must not exceed 2m.

Scanner application software

  • All Colortrac scanner software is 32-bit and compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems. On a 64-bit operating system 32-bit emulation mode is used. 32-bit emulation mode running inside a 64-bit architecture is not likely to improve scanner performance

USB and Ethernet scanner drivers

  • All Colortrac scanner Ethernet, USB2 and USB3 drivers are compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit computer processor architectures.
  • Computers must be USB2/USB3 compatible and have Gigabit Ethernet data ports for Ethernet equipped scanners. Directly connected Gigabit Ethernet switches or 10/100 switches will not work.
  • Colortrac SmartLF 4080 is not compatible with 64-bit operating systems and is not tested for Windows 7.

Legacy technical information

Newer Colortrac scanners are compatible and fully supported with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 operating systems. SmartWorks Pro may still work with older operating systems. SmartWorks TOUCH has been developed using advanced Microsoft software technology and requires Windows 7 and later operating systems. Colortrac no longer supports or recommends the use of Windows XP with Colortrac scanning products.

Supported data connections are USB2, SuperSpeed USB3 and GigaBit Ethernet.  For SuperSpeed USB3 please refer to USB3 section below

Colortrac SmartWorks EZ and SmartWorks EZ Touch software operate in Touch Mode with Windows 7 and Windows 8 using a compatible touch screen without additional drivers.  To use these programs with Windows Vista or Windows XP, a touch driver from the touch screen manufacturer is required.  For optimal screen comfort with SmartWorks EZ operators on higher resolution touch monitors (above 1280 pixels height axis) users may prefer to reduce the screen operating resolution slightly or run with a larger screen font size

SmartWorks EZ Touch is designed to work with monitors which have a screen height axis resolution of 800 pixels or better

SmartWorks EZ Touch is a full-time, full screen application and is not designed to be minimised.  To select other programs while still running SmartWorks EZ Touch use Alt+Tab

Microsoft .NET may need to be installed or updated on older operating systems when installing the Colortrac SmartWorks EZ bundled software (SmartWorks EZ Touch does not require .NET)

End of Life for Windows XP

From 8th April 2014 support and security updates for Windows XP are no longer be available.  This means that Colortrac is not be able to guarantee the viability of scanning systems being used with the XP operating system.  Although Colortrac does not foresee any sudden scanner issues as a result of this our recommendation would be to upgrade any XP-based scanning installation to a supported version of Windows at the earliest opportunity.  Customers seeking assistance from the Colortrac support department for a problem which could reasonably be considered to be XP o/s related will be urged to upgrade first.
