CopySmart Main Functions

1 Understanding the main functions

It is advisable to learn how to use the Preview facility before proceeding.  First of all though a few important facts:

1. RESOLUTION  From a SCAN Preview a full quality copy can be made without re-scanning or reloading the media.  This is because CopySmart acquires scan quality data during the Preview stage.  Take care to ensure that an APPROPRIATE scan resolution is used.  CopySmart scan resolution should be 400 dpi at least for enlargement copying whereas 200 dpi will be fine for making draft copies to a black and white printer.  Although scanning speed is not often an issue when copying because printer speeds are nearly always slower than the scanner, unnecessary scan resolution will make the computer work harder and increase copying time.

2. HOT FOLDERS work in exactly the same way as regular copying but instead of formatting the copy data for one of the range of internal printers supported by CopySmart (Mutoh, Canon, HP and Encad) the data is instead converted to TIFF data and sent to a folder.  The name of the file made by the Hot Folder driver follows the form of CopySmart0000.tif and increments automatically.  Usually RIPs or print systems using hot folders can be configured to automatically delete the hot folder file after it has been used to print the copy.  Using Hot folders

3. SELECTING THE INPUT CopySmart can accept image data from the scanner or from file.  Either of these inputs can be checked before copying using the Preview button.  When taking data from the scanner, clicking COPY after using PREVIEW starts the copy immediately - WITHOUT RESCANNING.  Previews are made at the same resolution as the copy.  After pressing copy all preview and copy data is discarded.   For more on this click the link

4. Image Crop or AOI  CopySmart does not use 'Area of Interest' to marquee the image from a low resolution scan before rewinding the media and scanning at the full scan resolution.  Instead, areas of interest for copying are marqueed from the Preview window.  Any marqueed area will be copied as soon as the COPY button is pressed according to the output settings configured in the Printer window area of the CopySmart user interface. 5. ROTATION   CopySmart cannot rotate images.  Therefore when copying an A1 or D size drawing always place these in the scanner long-edge first (or landscape fashion as you hold them). Turning the original

6. ENLARGING  CopySmart can enlarge output by selecting a bigger paper size by scrolling the paper sizes available or by overtyping the width and length of the copy or by using a percentage e.g. 1.414 enlarges A2 to A1.  REDUCTION is achieved entering a smaller size in the copy size window parameters. Enlargement

7. PRESETS The choice of Preset is controlled by the Document Type - Photographic, Poster & Graphics, Map, Drawing or Text. Selecting Drawing provides the Preset choices of; Standard Copy, Sharpened, Dithered original, Black line enhanced and Highlighter.  The Preset 'Standard Copy' is common to all Document Types and has all filtering disabled. Selecting Presets

8. FILE PREVIEW & CROP  Copying is possible from a file.  First Preview the file and crop if required.  This demonstration shows how to load the file and use the marquee grips before pressing Copy. Preview

9. WINDOWS PRINTER  CopySmart allows the use of any printer via the WINDOWS PRINTER driver route.  Wherever possible the internal CopySmart bespoke drivers should be used as these will provide more accurate control of copy size, better colour reproduction, and faster copy times.  In this example the Windows driver is chosen, then the CopySmart Windows Printer device is selected and a Preview made.  Next the Copy button is pressed.  At this point the familiar Properties for the chosen printer are  made available for the operator to select the paper size, quality and so on. 10. Using ACTIVE file  CopySmart can be made to send copy data to a disk file in TIFF, JPEG, PNG or PDF either at the same time as a copy is made or instead of the copy.  The file name is operator dependant but is overwritten each time the copy is made.  This demonstration shows how after a Preview the regular ink jet printer device is turned off, the ACTIVE printer is enabled and the resulting file is then located and opened with a standard file viewer. CopySmart outputs
CopySmart uses three output methods; internally controlled and colour profiled Colortrac printer drivers (Canon, HP, Encad, Mutoh), any Windows printer driver (combining CopySmart scaling with the driver's own paper selections, quality modes, speed settings etc) and the Hot Folder TIFF driver.

We recommend that after making your first copy using the Tutorial you work through the various items in this section to familiarise yourself more fully with the various functions of the CopySmart interface.
