Colortrac begins shipping SmartLF Gx 42 October 2nd 2006
The new CCD based Gx 42 scanners from Colortrac have at last started leaving the production line at the St Ives facility.  The new scanner uses 5 pre-assembled DCUs (Digital Camera Units) which greatly reduce the time needed to build the scanner.  Unlike all previous CCD scanners from Colortrac the new SmartLF format machine although heavier than the Cx 40 unit is still lighter and more portable than the previous Series 4 models.  As we know scanners can be damaged by even the most careful of courier companies  but fortunately the new low-profile shape and construction of the Gx 42 has already proven itself to be much better than expected at surviving the rigours of the shipping process.  Other new features include:
  • 1200 dpi sensors yielding optical true 600 dpi x 600 dpi resolution
  • Single soft document upper pressure roller
  • Full 42 inches (1067mm) scan width
  • 48-bit RGB color
  • Separate 16-bit sensors for black and white
  • Mono, color and Express color in normal and thick media models
  • New high efficiency fluorescent tube lighting
Colortrac's Peter de Winter-Brown says,

"The Gx 42 range embodies completely new innovative features like the modularised cameras and soft pressure roller.  Together with the true optical 600 x 600 dpi resolution the Gx 42 promises to be a really great performer!  Gx 42 performs almost as well as the CIS equipped Cx 40 in terms of image sharpness but extends capability in the high performance color graphics areas making it particularly suitable for bureaux and scanning professionals."
Colortrac EMEA Training & Sales Conference in Cascais (Lisbon)
Just recently at the end of September (25th and 26th), Colortrac held their Training & Sales Event at the attractive marina resort of Cascais near Lisbon in Portugal.  The purpose of the event was to provide a combination of sales and technical training to distributors and dealers (at the invitation of the distributor) covering the current SmartLF scanner range.  The event had common overview sessions and separate in-depth tracks tailored to the interests of the attendees and proved to be immensely valuable to all concerned.  This was the first time Colortrac had used this format for a corporate conference.  I'm sure everyone involved will join me in a special vote of thanks to Mr Peter Sandberg (EMEA Sales) who organised the entire event, looked after the distributors and their guests and of course took care of the catering arrangements.  Also a special thanks go to Mundisoft, Lda www.mundisoft.pt of Portugal for an excellent choice of venue and their assistance in the provision of an HP4500 plotter.

Getting strange effects in greyscale scans?

The Cx 40 is shipped with the Auto Normalisation set for 'Never' and assumes that the operator will take care of white balance maintenance and be aware that colder or warmer room conditions may affect the scans.  This arrangement is mainly to avoid unnecessary interruption of the scanning process, however, left without regular maintenance the scanner can start to be affected by room changes and the smoothness of color or greys can be compromised.  Although matched during manufacture, CIS sensors can react slightly differently to changes in temperature and although this won't affect black and white scans it will be noticeable in some color and greyscale work.

To re-normalise the Cx 40 start the Cx Utilities (after installing from the scanner installation CD) and insert the white paper normalisation target shipped with the scanner. It is important that the target is kept clean and used with the matt side face down in the scanner.  Normalising only takes a few minutes.

News from the Distributors - Canon BE

Canon BE (Belgium) staged an important Open House event at their Diegem headquarters back in May.  Daniel Neutel (Product & Channel Marketing Manager CBS Marketing) was keen to launch the Cx 40 in combination with the Canon W6400 and the new iPF700.  The event was extremely well attended with interest in the Cx 40 strong, particularly from architects needing scan facilities and budget color copying.

OCTOBER 2006 EDITION
BELOW: TEPEDE and team beginning the race!
In the evening after a full day of Sales and Technical training sessions it was time for the 'Activity Event'.  For Peter Sandberg, a keen fan of all things nautical it was not a difficult decision between golf, the bar and some sailing and fortunately those who selected this option exceeded everyone's expectations.  Apart from a couple of people who didn't have suitable clothing it was a huge success and everyone really enjoyed it.  We had great fun and apart from a minor collision in the bay (an over-zealous Peter S.) it all went off very well.
The first session began with a fresh introduction to the Gx 42 scanner - of course this model had first been shown at Cambridge in November last year at the launch of the Cx 40.  As many will remember the product was shown operational at that time but there have been some sizeable improvements to the basic design since then following feedback from Early Customer Acceptance Trials (ECAT) before going into full production earlier this month.
The early part of the first day covered the color gamut advantages of CCD technology and the differences between the sharpness and the tonal qualities of the two quite different imaging technologies.  The sales track targetted key selling points of Gx 42, pricing and market development funding.  The second day started with a review of the benchmarks comparing the Colortrac technologies with the competition in terms of image clarity, color, thresholding, speeds and overall scan efficiency. The technical track meanwhile covered routine maintenance issues of the Cx 40 and Gx 42, use of the various software utilities to update, maintain and optimise the scanners and a how to configure and use SmartLF and CopySmart.  Delegates were polled afterwards on the usefulness of the conference and the results we're proud to say were extremely positive all round.

Colortrac is awarded ISO 9001 in China and Implements EU Directive 2002/95/EC (RoHS)
In September this year Colortrac's manufacturing plant in Suzhou, China gained the coveted ISO 9001 status.  ISO 9000 focuses primarily on "quality management" and is a voluntary process with standards developed in response to market demand on a worldwide basis.   For Colortrac, ISO 9000 is intended to maintain and continuously improve quality standards and ensure that future performance objectives are achieved.

These standards tie into the new european legislation concerning the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment - such as scanners.  All SmartLF scanners since May 2006 (pre-dating the introduction of the Directive) have been RoHS compliant and are free from lead (Pb) which was used in the electronics and other highly toxic chemicals (cadmium and mercury) used in finishing and coatings.  Reducing these chemicals helps to protect the environment at the manufacturing stage and also makes it easier to recycle the product at the end of its useful life.
Colortrac is fully committed to protecting the environment and will be introducing Energy Star compliance in the future as the next stage in this important and ongoing process.
BARCELONA, June 6, 2006 - Building on the successes of previous events hosted across central and eastern Europe, Canon Europe hosted its 7th Concerto event at The Palau de Congressos de Catalunya, in Barcelona, Spain.  As part of their commitment to development and innovation as well showing the range of new products and solutions including the iPF500, 600, 700, 5000 and 9000 printer range, Canon were very generous and made a significant area available to Spanish partner Informatica demonstrating the Colortrac Cx 40 CIS scanner.

Using long USB 2 cables

We have had reports of customers complaining of intermittent or difficulty in scanning with the Cx 40 and earlier 4080e scanners.  In a number of cases it was discovered that the customer had replaced the USB 2 cable supplied by Colortrac with a longer USB 2 cable - some as long as 5m.  In all cases normal operation of the scanner was restored by changing back to the 2m cable.
USB 2 cables operate at very high data rates even when scanning in black & white - the computer constantly receives greyscale data from the scanner.  It is importrant to allow the scanner and computer to work at their maximum data transfer rate using the standard cable.  Increasing the cable length upsets the system, produces too many errors and slows the communications down causing scanner problems.

OCTOBER 2006 - After strong demand from the distributors Colortrac announce the availability this month of direct printer drivers for their CopySmart software.  Direct drivers bypass the often bewildering array of configuration steps needed inside Windows drivers, they do not auto fit, auto rotate and are much more reliable.  Currently in beta, (available upon request) please monitor the smartdownloads page for more details.
Colortrac CopySmart copying product gets support for Mutoh DrafStation & ValueJet

CopySmart has recently been restructured to speed up introduction of support for new Hewlett-Packard products.
OCTOBER 2006 - In a move akin to the method used years ago for providing driver support to mainframe and mini computer software applications (before the emergence of Windows drivers) Hewlett-Parkard has introduced a product-wide raster driver library. This single item has greatly reduced the time required to source the individual programming code for each new product and means that Colortrac can offer CopySmart drivers (beta at the moment) for the brand new HP Designjet Z2100 printer range in record time.  Please monitor the smartdownloads page for more details.
An 8-ink device, the new Designjet is available in 24" and 44" sizes and replaces the 500 and 800 series machines. Operating with Vivera inks these printers use an embedded spectrophotometer enabling the printer to generate its own color profiles.  How well they will work in conjunction with the new SmartLF Gx 42e scanner and CopySmart is yet to be tested. We eagerly await your feedback!!
