OCTOBER 2005 EDITION
i
The internal HP4000 driver for the CopyWorks and CopySmart products has been tested and approved by Colortrac engineering.  After some initial problems with the version built into CopySmart v1.2 D3 a fully working version is now available as a simple dll patch to anyone who has a requirement.  As with all printer drivers from Colortrac this new version is available free-of-charge from the Colortrac download page for distributors.

The Colortrac Conference this year is to be held at the Cambridge Garden House Hotel in the centre of Cambridge here in the UK on the 17th and 18th November.  Following a similar agenda to the successful 2004 conference in Lelystad the occasion will be a mix of Colortrac based sessions on the first day with a chance to hear the latest from the Colortrac Ltd Approved Software Product partners (CLASP) on day two.  New to the CLASP line-up this time are RATIO, Softcover and Colorbus who will be making their pitches to the whole of the distribution membership.  Also we will be making a number of very exciting announcements on the subject of scanners themselves -  the details of which (of course) can only be revealed on the day.

To all of you who distribute Colortrac scanners, can we take this opportunity to repeat a sincere and warm welcome to this year's conference in November.

Peter de Winter-Brown
Sales and Marketing Director Colortrac Ltd.

hosted by the University Sains Malaysia (USM) last month at Penang in Malaysia.  Abuli Motiwala, Naela, Mr. Wong Choong Fong (Sales) and IT execs Alan and Ravi attended the very popular exhibition.  Scanner interest came mostly from lecturers and the Department of Survey and Mapping (JUPEM) Penang who liked the price, specification and portability of the SmartLF.  E.J. Motiwalla are based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.    www.ejmotiwalla.com
Experts in the field of Geomatics & Reprographic Systems, E.J. Motiwalla were present at the International Symposium and Exhibition on GeoInformation
Tomassz Zielak and his colleagues from Agraf the Colortrac distributor in Poland have also been extremely active promoting the SmartLF product.  Appearing first at ProCAX, a show for the CAD industry, Agraf demonstrated scanning editing and printing of engineering and architectural information using the Colortrac scanner.  They also represented Colortrac at GEA 2005 - a show for GIS users where they were able to show visitors the process again, but this time applied to maps and plans.  Both shows lasted for 3 days and interest in SmartLF throughout was reported as strong.

Major Autodesk dealers Aplikom and PROCAD also now have SmartLF on board as an approved large format scanner product.  Aplikom are campaigning hard with SmartLF through their own website.  www.agraf.com.pl

GEI, our distributor for SmartLF in North America were busy working with Canon at the EXPO in New York last month.  Showing the SmartLF linked to the Canon W8400 imagePROGRAPH printers, GEI demonstrated the ease of use of the Colortrac CopySmart copying software.

The Canon EXPO 2005, a one-company tradeshow marks the beginning of a global technology tour which also takes in Paris and Tokyo later on in the year.

UK distributor Allied Images won a large order recently to supply 12 SmartLF 4080e CIS scanners to a power utilities company in the UK.  Steve Morin for Allied Images commented, " The launch of SmartLF is having a considerable impact on the market by creating opportunities for customers who previously were prohibited from owning a scanner due to high prices".  In this case it wasn't just the small guys who sat up and took notice."  Allied Images are currently moving to larger premises, a development closely linked to their recent successes with the SmartLF and other Colortrac scanner products.
October 6th and 7th saw the successful training of German distributor TEPEDE for the SmartLF scanner product.  The company will market low cost copy systems around the SmartLF with the Universal Repro Stand or Computer Stand options.  The course was held over two days at the company's Hannover Democenter where seven technical personnel were trained in all aspects of the product ranging from basic knowledge of the scanning technology, use of the maintenance and upgrade software programs, basic skills in operating and profiling the application software through to changing the glass and replacing CIS sensor modules and cables.  The course lasted a little over one day.
From left to right behind SmartLF: Pascal Bettens (Belgium), Hans-Hermann Tjardes (Hannover), Bjorn Buchel (Willich), Stubel Werner (Munich), Karl Heinz Strotkamp (Oldenburg), Hoffmann Jurgen (Munich) and Hans Dieter Jagow (Dusseldorf)
Allied Images is pleased to announce that Mallon Technology of Cookstown, Northern Ireland, has been appointed an accredited SmartLF reseller.  Mallon Technology - GIS consultants and software developers currently produce the Diamond product, a software suite used widely by local councils.  The company also provides GIS data capture and conversion services throughout Ireland and the rest of Europe.  Mallon recently invested in a full range of scanning equipment for their Cookstown head office and can now scan documents up to A0 size as well as microfiche, making it the only operation of its kind in the area.
About ISIS . . .
ISIS (Image & Scanner Interface Specification) is a well known and established driver level connection standard predominantly in the small format document scanning market. Unlike Twain, any application running an ISIS scanner will always present the same or very similar scanner dialogue boxes to the operator. This is a significant advantage when operators move from small to a new large format scanner as there is no new software training overhead. ISIS drivers are regulated by Pixel Translations Inc.

About Certification and Support. . . .
ISIS for Colortrac SmartLF is compatible but not certificated by Pixel Translations however the driver has been tested with a range of applications using ISIS connections and has been found to work well.  Colortrac have taken the decision to halt support and development for this product but are able to make it available at no cost to customers on the strict understanding that downstream support is not provided.  The driver can be ordered through the distribution channel in the normal way.
Recent tests have proved compatibilty between the SmartLF scanner running the included SmartLF basic software and the Xerox 510 printer.  Printing black and white scans from the Copy button in SmartLF works by feeding scan data to the regular Windows printer driver - in this case the Xerox 510.  Downloading and rasterising an A0 200 dpi scan takes about 15 seconds with a 400 dpi taking a little over a minute.  Printing time of the 510 is about 15 seconds.

Step1.  Using the File or Copy button on the scanner front panel momentarily start SmartLF scanning again .

Step2.  Press the STOP button and release.  The scanner will stop and the display will change from  scanning to Rewind?

Step3.  Before the display changes back to Ready press and hold the STOP button again.

The document can be completely rewound using this method without needing to fully eject the document
For a trial period Colortrac are willing to offer any distributor or dealer with their own SmartLF unit the opportunity to receive limited live product training over the internet.  Subject to availability and demand the session uses a combination of GoTo Meeting and Skype enabling the trainer to control the scanner over the internet and talk individuals through ScanWorks, CopySmart and the SmartLF application.  The service can also be used to train technicians on scanner calibration, diagnosing shipment damage problems or re-stitching the sensors after repair.

Requirements:  SmartLF and the appropriate software, a broadband internet connection, email (to receive the GoTo Meeting apppointment), Skype and a microphone headset.

The CopySmart driver for the Encad T200+ urgently needs testing in the high-speed or KKKK mode.  The driver will be built into the next release of CopySmart but is available now from the SmartLF downloads page.  To use this driver copy it into the drivers directory and overwrite the existing installed driver.

This driver was requested by several distributors and is a natural match for the SmartLF 4080m when putting together a solution for a low-cost black and white digital copying system.
