The task of ICC colour profiling new paper for Colortrac's CopyWorks and CopySmart products is now much easier to follow with the Wizard at the controls.
For some time now users of Colortrac scanners have been asking for a method of scanning the more difficult originals which can sometimes find their way into the operator's in-tray. Typically these tend to be originals incorporating photographic images or difficult examples of shading and shadow detail. Photo dither is here to assist!
How does Photo mode work?
ScanWorks users will recognise the basic and adaptive thresholding terminology but operation of these controls has now changed slightly and uses a single slider instead of the separate background and window sliders of the earlier version. The new features relate mainly to Dither Photo and Dither Lineart modes.
In this Issue:
ScanWorks gets new monochrome power to really get all the details of those originals to disk.

This month sees the introduction of the all-new 'Wizard' configurator to the acclaimed CopyWorks and CopySmart copying products from Colortrac.
Developed to assist the user through the media profiling process the wizard combines helpful text and photographic images in a step-by-step simple sequence.
" To get the very best from the colour copying process it is essential that the media used in the printer is profiled inside CopyWorks and CopySmart" says Declan Tyler of Colortrac Sales & Marketing.
SmartLF moves into Eastern Europe
After its introduction by XES Oy Finland, Colortrac's new low-cost scanner is really getting off to a good start in the Baltic countries of Latvia and Estonia. RIGA, Latvia in November saw an important sales and technical training meeting hosted by Raivo Valters of DIP and his team. Twelve members of staff already very experienced in the sales and support of large format inkjet printers saw first hand how the SmartLF could be linked and operated as part of a copy solution when combined with Canon W7200 and Hewlett-Packard large format devices.
The same original scanned using IAT (adaptive) thresholding.
New dither mode pushes beyond the threshold :
Long awaited Photo dither feature arrives!
Adaptive is now single slider
Although very effective with two sliders in the previous version, ScanWorks is now even easier to control without loss of quality. The functions of the Background and Window sliders have been brought together into one simple to use Foreground slider.
The JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) developed the JPG format specifically to store colour photographs. However the format has proved very popular amongst scanner operators to store greyscale imagery primarily due to the compact file sizes achievable and wide acceptability of this file format.
NOTE: The release of the new Photo mode in ScanWorks may challenge the use of greyscale jpg in favour of binary TIFFG4. We shall just have to wait and see!
CopySmart can be used directly from the SmartLF control panel by pressing the COPY button.
ScanWorks can also be started remotely by pressing the FILE button on the SmartLF panel. Note that the .NET Framework must be installed and that this will only work for Windows XP users. See the manual for more details.
New release of SmartLF basic software ships this month!
This innovative application software which ships with all variants of the SmartLF scanner has now been updated to incorporate some suggestions from the user base. Designed to provide simple batch based scan-to-file, scan-to-copy and scan-to-email, the program now has warnings to prevent users from getting too carried away and attempting email of full colour large format scans. On a more serious note the program also warns the user to set up the Windows printer page sizes before copying to prevent paper wastage. Ultimate paper economy and accurate copy sizing and colour are the strengths of the CopyWorks and CopySmart products of course.

ScanWorks greyscale jpg is back
By popular demand and after some degree of pressure from the Colortrac userbase this unusual combination for greyscale has now been re-introduced
Photo mode scans are still binary files with just two levels of black - ON or OFF. This means the scan is still small, can be saved to TIFF G4 and will be directly compatible with the majority of monochrome LED printers. Dither Lineart works very well for drawings and sketches.
