Remember. If you know about an interesting application for a Colortrac scanner let's hear about it at UPDATE.

Pass it on!
Colortrac visited Thrane Printing Systems (formerly Thrane-Gruppen) at Billingstad in Norway last month to update their technical team on calibration and demonstration techniques for SmartLF.  The one-day course given by Declan Tyler (Colortrac S&M) covered sales USPs, scanner technology, calibration, typical USB2 issues, corruption recovery, scanner preparation, firmware and driver upgrading. The full day was a combination of presentation and  hands-on, but everyone departed with much more confidence and understanding of the innovative technology behind this new Colortrac product .
Better attended this year than 2004, Colortrac was represented by Graphic Enterprises Inc. Canton Ohio geiworldwide.com for the SmartLF scanner.   Founded in 1970, GEI are a major player in the US for the supply of leading edge graphics equipment and superior customer service.  Also representing Colortrac were Paradigm Imaging Group  paridigmimaging.com the US wide service bureau and custom solutions provider who were exhibiting the Series4e range.  Both booths reported very strong levels of large format scanner interest.

After pressure from world players like Caldera and other software providers in the Mac market, Colortrac have decided to take a serious look at developing a Mac OS X interface /driver for SmartLF.  Distributors Thrane in Norway, XES Oy in Finland and Thetascan in France are strong supporters of Mac and the Caldera applications. Because of the way SmartLF is conceived this task is not simple but we hope to have more news on the exciting new product later on in the year.  If you distribute or sell Caldera we would like to hear your views.  Please mail me at info@colortrac.com including the words 'OSX SmartLF' in the subject line.

A number of you are distributing this low-solvent based printer from Seiko and the results we've seen from this machine are quite superb.  Colortrac wish to know whether the CopyWorks and CopySmart products would benefit from the addition of a driver for this machine?  The ColorPainter 64S uses a new "low-solvent  ink based on ethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate (no cyclohexanone). This special solvent makes prints extremely durable against water, cleaners and scratches.  The Seiko 64S prints on uncoated media as vinyl, banners, films, fabric and papers and will last outdoors for up to three years without lamination.  Clearly this machine requires proper ventilation and is a bit of a specialist printer but are they sold alongside Colortrac scanners in a bureau for example?  Your views on this would be most appreciated.

The Hewlett-Packard HP800 plotter was an sRGB driven, not a CMYK driven printer when it was first released.  This meant that operators, provided they used HP consumables would be guaranteed  correct colours from an sRGB based Windows driver - in other words the plotter would make the corrections based on the consumables loaded and no external profiling would ever be needed.  Neat idea ! Only problem was that it prevented freedom of choice in sourcing non-HP consumables.  Also sRGB printing delays any activity until all the file is in the printer and processed (bit like Postscript).  Not so neat!   Hardly surprising then that they changed their minds when hardware sales started to stall.  Why do we need to know this?
Answer: Use the HP1050/1055 driver in CopyWorks or CopySmart instead of the HP800 sRGB driver and see the HP800 print as the scanner makes the scan.  Much better at demonstrations or trade shows.
TIP: Avoid the slow USB1.1 interface.  The network port (standard on newer models) is much faster.
The advantages of copying with CopySmart (Colortrac internal driver) over SmartLF (printer manufacturers' Windows driver) are as follows:
  • CopySmart (and CopyWorks) work in continuous roll mode and copy only the length scanned i.e. they do not work to a standard sheet size and so save paper
  • support colour profiling for the most accurate copying of colour possible
  • are accurate in 1:1 copying, enlargement or reduction
  • are generally much faster than Windows drivers to print (and configure)
Typical CopySmart driver questions:

Q. Why do we need to select a Windows driver if CopySmart already has its own driver?
A: CopySmart uses the connection configuration (ip address) and media choices of the Windows driver.  It also uses the Windows spooling function to queue multiple copies.

Q. If CopySmart uses the Windows driver to connect to its own driver does this mean it takes twice as long to copy?
A: No, CopySmart produces its own printer specific commands and bypasses this function of the Windows driver.

CLASP activity is high at the moment with Cambridge based partner softcover soon to release a SmartLF driver for their Scan2CAD raster to vector conversion software.  More detail on this product can be found at www.softcover.com
CLASP partner www.softelec.com plan to launch a SmartLF scanner driver very soon to support their new VPHybrid CAD V.8 product.
Version 8. is a professional application which now includes a collection of brand new function groups, such as dimensions (on raster!), customizeable user workflows, quick element selection, raster table recognition, and many more.
With this expanded technology, VPHybridCAD V8 will deliver new standards for hybrid processing and vectorization.
As a partner on the CLASP program softelec hope to make available an internal direct driver for the Colortrac SmartLF scanner sometime in June.

ScanWorks 2.4.1.1 colour classification availability
The Hewlett-Packard HP4000 Designjet printer/plotter is now amongst the internal driver list for CopySmart and CopyWorks.  The driver is available free on request and needs only to be dropped into
the program folder for it to appear in the list of HP target printers.  The driver will be incorporated into the CD for the next release.
For more information on the CopySmart product click infocopysmart
How to eliminate slow copying to the HP800
Some users of ScanWorks have noticed than upon ugrading to the latest version they no longer have colour classification available as part of the 'more choices' buttons.  This is a temporary problem which will be fixed in the next release.  In the meantime re-installing the previously working version alongside 2.4.1.1.on the same computer will restore classification function.
