TWAIN (acronym for technology without an interesting name) is not available or currently planned for the SmartLF large format scanner range. However, a WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) interface is available.
Like TWAIN, WIA allows you to scan directly from a host application.
TWAIN is supplied by the scanner manufacturer and is usually loaded into the Windows environment with the scanner driver. Very often a TWAIN driver can look very like the manufacturer's stand-alone scanning application and will appear when requested through the application's main File menu. TWAIN drivers have the advantage that they let the user scan data directly into any host application, eliminating the need to save the data in one program and then open it up again from inside the program that needs the data.
WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) is a Microsoft utility that uses the manufacturer's Windows scanner driver and a simple scanning interface to allow users to scan into photo editing software or other WIA compliant raster applications. WIA when called from inside a program behaves just like TWAIN but will always have the same Windows styled user interface, no matter which scanner it is attached to. Outside of a program Windows WIA also permits the user to scan to file when used from Control Panel's Cameras and Scanners, or from the scanner device properties in the My Computer listing.
